There are so many products boasting being the best for your skin, however they often contain ingredients that can do more harm than good. So, what should you avoid in order for your skin to stay looking healthy? Here is Edye’s helpful short list of skincare ingredients to avoid:
While it may have uses for sterilizing wounds, alcohol dissolves bacteria and skin cells, leading to dryness and damage, along with a pile up of dead skin cells that may be hard to exfoliate away. When purchasing a toner or facial astringent, ensure it doesn’t contain isopropyl alcohol to avoid weakening your skin’s natural abilities to protect you against free radicals.
Though it can be used to prevent infections, hydrogen peroxide is found in many toxic dyes and has a corrosive nature that can lead to burns and blisters on the skin. Additionally, it is a common allergen that may result in inflammation.
Vegetable glycerin has been known to cause irritation in respiratory systems and gastrointestinal tracts, also irritating the mucous membranes in your lungs, which can cause adverse effects on your skin. Forms of irritation can include swelling, breathing problems, itching, and dizziness. Avoid products that contain vegetable glycerin, glycol alcohol, or glyceritol to keep looking and feeling fresh.
Water Based Solutions
Water-based products are cheap and easy to manufacture (which is why you often find it as a first ingredient of major brands), but only aid in drying out your skin. One of the big problems with water is that you need emulsifiers to make water and oil blend, which usually comes in the form of chemicals that are often found in lotions to allow blending to occur. Edye's Naturals Face & Body Butter products don’t need emulsifiers because they do not contain water as a base ingredient.
And one last piece of helpful advice, while hot showers feel great, they strip the natural oils away from your skin, breaking the barrier that contains your skin’s moisture. Try using lukewarm water rather than hot, especially if your skin is already prone to dryness and itchiness. Avoid potentially toxic and/or skin damaging ingredients by using only healthy, organic products like Edye’s Naturals products.
Do you know your body’s largest organ? It’s your skin! Not only does it hold everything else together, but it also serves other important functions that protect and take care of you.
Skin protects your internal organs from injury and infection and helps your immune system by providing a strong barrier to viruses and bad bacteria, while providing a safe habitat for good bacteria go grow. It naturally produces Vitamin D, which is vital for health.
Your skin’s sebaceous glands produce sebum, which is natural oil that keeps your skin lubricated and protected. Sweat works with sebum to form a protective film, which not only eliminates waste and toxins but also helps maintain a normal body temperature. Blood vessels, hair, and sweat glands in your skin work together to control the heat flow between you and the surrounding environment.
This sensitive organ even provides sensory feedback to the brain because it is rich in receptors. Nerves give you a sense of touch, which lets you feel pain too. This allows you to react to dangerous situations around you and ultimately protects you from further pain (think touching a hot stove!).
Your skin is always making new skin cells to replace the dead ones, but even those work to forma barrier and block harmful substances from getting inside your body. As these dead cells fall off, new cells replace them to become part of the protective barrier. Take care of your skin to keep it in great condition to protect you. Use only healthy, organic products like Edye’s Naturals products to take care of your skin the way it takes care of you!
Your physician has determined those dry skin patches you have is a skin condition called dermatitis. So what is it? Dermatitis has many causnes and can occur in many forms. This non-contagious skin condition involves an itchy rash on red and swollen skin. Medical practitioners often interchange the term dermatitis with the condition atopic eczema, which is the most common form of eczema that caused internally with a possible chronic inflammatory reaction that typically has a genetic link and family history of allergic sensitivity. It mainly affects children, but can also affect adults.
Contact dermatitis occurs when skin is touched by an irritant and develops inflammation during initial or repeated exposure. Contact dermatitis can be caused soap, detergents, and solvents. Atopic eczema is caused by allergens including nickel, rubber, fragrances, cosmetic chemicals, dyes, paints, and topical medications.
Factors related to dermatitis include age, exposure to irritants, allergies, asthma and occupation. The best way to avoid contact dermatitis is to take precaution when interacting with possible irritants (use of gloves etc.) or select fragrance-free products. To keep symptoms at bay it’s best to take shorter baths with warm water followed by moisturizing products such as Edye’s Naturals Face & Body Butter (which is safe for all skin types) while your skin is damp to help prevent reoccurring dermatitis.
Non-prescription anti-inflammation and anti-itch products are easy to find, but fish oil supplements in addition to consuming whole foods rich in vitamin D, or taking food-based vitamin D supplements and probiotics also have qualities to treat dermatitis. Tea tree oil and aloe vera soothe irritated skin and simply putting cool, moist cloths on affected areas can ease itching. Avoid further irritating the affected area and avoid contact with the original irritant.
Edye’s Naturals products are made using organic ingredients to help your skin return to normal and repair damage caused by dermatitis. As shown in our testimonial, many of our customers use our products regularly to keep their skin hydrated and prevent flare-ups related to dermatitis.
It’s no secret that obesity is an epidemic in the United States, and there’s plenty of research conducted each year to learn why its happening and how to best prevent it. As revealed in Michael Moss’ book Salt Sugar Fat: How the Food Giants Hooked Us, not everyone is working to combat the issue. In fact, the food industry is made up of intelligent scientists and chemists, whose main objective is to keep the general population eating their “bad for you” products by any means necessary. And they push them as though they are legalized narcotic. According to Moss there are three key ingredients that act much like drugs do in affecting your brain’s pleasure zones: salt, sugar, and fat and packaged food manufacturers work hard main high levels of them in the food you feed your family.
Through interviews with industry insiders, Moss unveils the inner workings of the food industry and shares anecdotes that might make someone wonder what food is left to trust, including:
While Moss leaves it up to public health advocates and organizations to solve the problem of holding the food industry accountable, you can always take your health into your own hands. Always choose to eat whole foods and read labels of every thing you consume or use on your body (avoid ingredients you don’t understand or can’t pronounce.) Most importantly choose to treat your body well inside and out with organic products with ingredients you can understand such as Edye’s Naturals.
A Message from Edye Dumhart - Founder of Edye's Naturals
I heard about the Suppers Program in Princeton that teaches healthy eating in small groups at someone’s home. I signed up for the Macrobiotics program because I wanted to learn about it and when I attended I did notice that the women in attendance had a healthy glow to their skin. They shared how macrobiotics improved their overall health.
By Definition: Macrobiotic is constituting, relating to, or following a diet of whole pure prepared foods that is based on Taoist principles of the balance of yin and yang.
According to Verne Varona author of “Macrobiotics for Dummies” (Wiley) by following the basic macrobiotic life and awareness principles will help you get in touch with a more intellectual and spiritual way of living, boosting health and happiness. Often following a macrobiotic diet includes the consumption of brown rice, beans, sea vegetables, and Asian yin-yang philosophy of finding balance in life for health and vitality. It is basically a vegan diet that eats a small amount of white fish. It is important to use locally grown seasonal foods even in winter in the northeast where I live. In colder seasons, apply longer cooking times and more salt. Miso soup is a winter staple along with squashes and cabbage. This lifestyle gained popularity in the 1960s however has actually been around much longer than that.
A macrobiotic diet isn't just about your weight -- it's about achieving balance in your life. It promises a healthier, more holistic lifestyle for people of all ages that encompasses mental outlook as well as food choices. Macrobiotic dieters are encouraged to eat regularly, chew their food extremely well, listen to their bodies, stay active, and maintain a perky, positive mental outlook
Would I do this diet every day? For me it is too restrictive, takes too much time and would be hard to eat out and keep my family happy. I will apply some of the ideas since I like local seasonal foods and using healthy cooking methods.
Here is a traditional recipe from The George Ohsawa Macrobiotic Foundation, Inc.

The latest diet touted by celebrities from Gwyneth Paltrow and Jennifer Aniston to Jared Leto and Super Bowl winning quarterback Tom Brady and wife, model Gisele Bündchen is the alkaline diet. The diet is based on the premise that replacing acid-forming foods with alkaline foods will improve your health, and maybe even prevent cancer. By focusing on what foods you eat; you can alter the acidity or alkalinity (the pH value) of your body. Of course, it will also be good for your skin.
You can actually buy test strips and test your own saliva to gauge your pH balance, which is what I recently tried. Ideally your PH should be around 7.4. I was surprised to find out which foods are acidic and which are alkaline based (click here to see a list) and you might be too! Did you know lemons are on the top of the list of alkaline foods, even though they are acidic? Why isn’t baking soda – a very alkaline food – not at the top of the list?
The more I thought about it, I realized why. Your stomach is full of acids and if you put something very alkaline into it, your stomach needs to turn on the acid to get back to normal. When you metabolize foods and extract the energy from them, you are actually burning the foods and leaving a residue, which can be acidic, alkaline, or neutral. Essentially, if you eat foods with acidic ash, it makes your body acidic. Same goes for alkaline, though neutral ash has no effect.
Food groups you should focus on are those with calcium, magnesium, and potassium, including fresh, preferably organic fruits, vegetables, millet, quinoa, spelt, and sprouted breads. Acidic foods are sugar, wheat, processed foods, meats, coffee, black tea, trans fats, and soda. Smoking also makes your body acidic. Legumes are neutral.
The alkaline diet presumes that acidic ash makes you more vulnerable to illness and disease, whereas alkaline ash is considered beneficial and protective. By choosing more alkaline foods, you can alkalize your diet and improve your overall health. The general rule is to eat about 80 percent alkaline and 20 percent acidic foods. And don’t forget to take it one step further – use only all natural products with organic ingredients like Edye’s Naturals to truly live your healthiest, happiest life.
At a recent event, I met a woman who is an athletic trainer and diet coach. She later invited me to her house because she wanted to learn more about Edye’s Naturals and for me take a look at the products she uses on her skin. When I arrived, she was making cheese from raw milk and offered me homemade muffins – showcasing her mostly organic and entirely healthy diet. However, her skincare products were a different story!
Despite boasting pure ingredients and responsible origins, the essential oils she uses and sells to her clients were not organic. The typical definition of organic means using organic farming. Organic farming is in general features practices that strive to cycle resources, promote ecological balance, and conserve biodiversity. Organizations regulating organic products may restrict the use of certain pesticides and fertilizers in farming. In general, organic foods are also usually not processed using irradiation, industrial solvents or synthetic food additives. In comparison, the terms “pure” or “natural” are much less regulated and sometimes simply mean the product is minimally processed.
The caviar skin care product, which she bought for almost $110 off the list price of $350.00, only included caviar as an ingredient half way down a very long list of ingredients that were mainly water, chemicals, and alcohols. Unfortunately, price is not always an indicator of quality.
This woman’s experience demonstrates that you can be incredibly educated about the foods you consume, but still not as aware of the ingredients in products you put on your skin. She even said that 80 percent of what you put on your skin gets absorbed, but that may depend on the different ingredients. It’s just as important to read the labels on your skincare products as it is to read the labels on your food. If you can’t pronounce an ingredient or eat it, don’t put it on your skin either!
Remember that what you put on your skin is just as important as what you put in your body and stick with products you know contain only all natural, mostly organic ingredients, like Edye’s Naturals.

If you’ve ever looked at the ingredients in your yogurt, ice cream, Soy milk, canned evaporated milk or other processed foods, chances are you’ve come across carrageenan. It’s a common food additive extracted from seaweed that is used as a thickener and emulsifier to improve the texture of numerous foods. It is also used in other products such as toothpaste (check the labels). Depending on how it is prepared, carrageenan comes in two forms: degraded (or poligeenan) and undegraded. Undegraded carrageenan is approved for use in food, while degraded is not because it has been found to cause cancer when given in high concentrations. Food-grade carrageenan is not a known carcinogen.
Carrageenan is still approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration as an additive and is widely used in a variety of foods, but some dietitians and doctors urge for reconsideration of its use due to recent research findings. Here are a couple of reasons why you might consider limiting the amount of carrageenan in your diet.
Despite being a natural additive, carrageenan has several detrimental qualities, including:
While it may not be as bad as some sources say, there is still evidence that regular consumption of carrageenan can be harmful. The research on its ill effects may be questionable, but there is certainly no research promoting its benefits. Remember to only eat foods with proven health benefits and use products that contain natural, organic ingredients like Edye’s Naturals.

Olive oil is a staple in many domestic and commercial kitchens around the world, which makes for a bit of a problem when prices rise unexpectedly. Unfortunately, recent poor harvests are leading to just that as wholesale prices are due to jump by as much as 20 percent this year. Extreme heat, bacterial outbreaks, and severe flooding have impacted crop yields throughout the Mediterranean, resulting in costs that keep rising.
While the ultimate price increases will depend on several factors, Italy and Spain, the world’s largest producers, will be hit hardest. Difficult weather and the threat of pests mean that anyone looking for quality olive oil or products containing it can anticipate spending a bit more than usual in the months ahead. The U.S. alone accounts for 10 percent of the yearly consumption, so we can certainly expect a big impact in the health and beauty markets as businesses adjust.
China’s Interest in the Health Benefits of Olive Oil Increases Demand Too
According to recent data available, since 2006 to 2012 the average proportion of imported olive oil has been keeping the increases nearly 30% per year in China. Today, the Chinese market is in its adjustment stage along with the Chinese economy and politics, but, the Olive industry is expected to continue to grow in the years ahead. More than 250 olive oil brands are present in the Chinese olive oil market, nearly 100% of the import comes import from Greece, Spain, Turkey, Italy, Portugal, Australia and Argentina. This demand is causing prices to rise across the world.
Italian olive oil is more vulnerable than the oils produced in other climates due to its varied topography. While the diverse terrain lends to unique flavors and more than 400 olive varieties, it also produces major climate shifts and numerous pests that make the olives more difficult to protect compared with Spain or other countries.
Despite these changes, pure, organic ingredients remain as important as ever as staples in your diet and beauty routine. Edye’s Naturals remains committed to included the organic and natural source ingredients treat your body well.
Olive Oil Buying Tips:
I always make my own salad dressing with organic extra virgin olive oil, vinegar and spices. It tastes better and I know that it has healthy oils in it. Did you ever look at the oils used in grocery store salad dressing?
One advantage to olive oil is that it is cold pressed. Cold pressed is important since the other way of separating oil from the plant is with a chemical process that is not healthy. When shopping look for "cold pressed" on the label. All organic oils must be cold pressed. Some alternatives to olive oil are sunflower oil, avocado oil, coconut oil, safflower oil, and walnut oil. Those oils have a higher smoke point than extra virgin olive oil, so are better for cooking at higher temperatures.
Check out this is a handy chart from fix.com https://www.fix.com/blog/which-cooking-oil-to-use/ with information on smoke temperatures.
There are no medications specifically designed to treat dyslexia and even with adults, but especially with children, natural drug-free treatments are often the best approach, including chiropractic neurology.
Chiropractic neurologists are highly trained and qualified experts of the brain, spine and nervous system who have continued with advanced post graduate training and vigorous testing to provide all standard services in addition to specialized services to serve their community’s patients.
While medical neurologists prescribe medications and neurosurgeons use surgery to correct conditions, a chiropractic neurologist uses medication free and non-surgical treatment methods. Because of this, their services are sought to fill a unique role in treating brain and nervous system disorders in a safe and effective way that produces lasting health benefits. Conditions they can treat include:
Specialized chiropractic neurologists can locate and correct any vertebral subluxations and lessen the stress of the spine, discs, muscles, ligaments and nervous system – thereby relieving the symptoms of many learning disorders. These subluxations put pressure on the nerves leading to and from the spinal cord, which interferes with correct signaling to and from the brain. With regards to dyslexia, the pathways that allow for proper translation of written words into phonemes may be affected. By shifting these vertebrate into proper alignment, chiropractic neurologists can relieve the pressure on the nerves, which in turn allows the brain to properly process written words.
Edye’s Personal Story
I highly recommend finding a chiropractic neurologist with similar training to provide a new avenue of hope for successful treatment of conditions, if you or a loved one has a condition related to the brain or nervous system. After doing vision therapy, I went to another eye doctor in Pennington. This doctor liked vision therapy, but favored Syntonic (light therapy) and was ahead of his time since there are many devices with colored lights on television. I did the Syntonic, but the eye doctor also recommended I seek treatment from a neurological chiropractor. The doctor I began seeing was trained at the renowned Carrick Institute (https://carrickinstitute.com) under a program accredited by the American Chiropractic Neurology Board.
In my initial screening, he did all kinds of test of strength, balance, eye movements and more. When I walked out of the testing, I noticed that a saliva gland in my mouth had just started working. I now have been going to him for 20 years, but less frequently since he has made my body and brain work better. My eyes were corrected in seconds vs. vision therapy which took hours. He balances and lowers my blood pressure, improved my reading speed and calmed my stress levels, since basic living is easier. I had a vertebra in the middle of my back that would pop out of place the day after seeing other chiropractors, it now rarely pops out because my brain no longer tells it to pop out. He is very gentle with adjustments and is more concerned about eye movements. He puts blacked out goggles on with a camera inside so that he can see my eye movements in the dark, which tells a lot about what is going on in my brain. Ideally, he would like to see steady eyes with no ticks.
I know that there are not many neurological chiropractors in this U.S., but I highly recommend consider seeing one.
