Common Skin Care Ingredients that Do More Harm than Good

There are so many products boasting being the best for your skin, however they often contain ingredients that can do more harm than good. So, what should you avoid in order for your skin to stay looking healthy? Here is Edye’s helpful short list of skincare ingredients to avoid:

Alcohol

While it may have uses for sterilizing wounds, alcohol dissolves bacteria and skin cells, leading to dryness and damage, along with a pile up of dead skin cells that may be hard to exfoliate away. When purchasing a toner or facial astringent, ensure it doesn’t contain isopropyl alcohol to avoid weakening your skin’s natural abilities to protect you against free radicals.

Hydrogen Peroxide
Though it can be used to prevent infections, hydrogen peroxide is found in many toxic dyes and has a corrosive nature that can lead to burns and blisters on the skin. Additionally, it is a common allergen that may result in inflammation.

Vegetable Glycerin
Vegetable glycerin has been known to cause irritation in respiratory systems and gastrointestinal tracts, also irritating the mucous membranes in your lungs, which can cause adverse effects on your skin. Forms of irritation can include swelling, breathing problems, itching, and dizziness. Avoid products that contain vegetable glycerin, glycol alcohol, or glyceritol to keep looking and feeling fresh.

Water Based Solutions
Water-based products are cheap and easy to manufacture (which is why you often find it as a first ingredient of major brands), but only aid in drying out your skin. One of the big problems with water is that you need emulsifiers to make water and oil blend, which usually comes in the form of chemicals that are often found in lotions to allow blending to occur. Edye's Naturals Face & Body Butter products don’t need emulsifiers because they do not contain water as a base ingredient.

And one last piece of helpful advice, while hot showers feel great, they strip the natural oils away from your skin, breaking the barrier that contains your skin’s moisture. Try using lukewarm water rather than hot, especially if your skin is already prone to dryness and itchiness. Avoid potentially toxic and/or skin damaging ingredients by using only healthy, organic products like Edye’s Naturals products.
