Shared values make strong foundations for quality partnerships, as is the case with Edye’s Naturals and Blue Moon Acres. While Blue Moon Acres partners with Edye’s Naturals to sell the all natural Face and Body Butter in its store, it is most known for growing certified organic rice. Jim and Kathy Lyons started harvesting their first rice crop in 2014 and since have harvested over 12,000 pounds in five varieties including white, brown, and black; short, medium, and long grain; and specialized rice for risotto and sushi. Bags of their rice are sold at the farm’s own markets, at their stand in the Stockton Market, and online. The taste is so much better and fresher tasting than the rice in supermarkets.
While it’s unusual to hear of local rice being grown in New Jersey, Blue Moon Acres first gained notice as a pioneer in the production of microgreens in 1993 and their gourmet greens quickly became the favorites of top-tier chefs in places like New York City.
“I was working in the natural foods industry for a time and I realized, looking at Oriental healing, how important food is,” said Jim of his venture. “And a big part of healthy diets seemed to me to include good-quality whole grains.” Rice does not have gluten which many people have a problem eating.
One benefit of local grown rice is that it’s rarely grown paddy style, which means better avoidance of the absorption of arsenic. It also doesn’t have that stale smell that appears when the lipids in standard grains get volatile and lead to rancid rice. Since local rice is always fresh, it’s recommended to keep it cool and dry by putting it in a glass jar in your fridge.
It’s important to pay attention to not just what you put on your skin, but when you eat. Consider visiting on of Blue Moon Acres market for their organic products and of course make sure you use Edye’s Naturals to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Our water in Pennington, NJ is loaded with calcium, so much so that at my house we have replaced multiple dishwashers due to clogging. All of my sinks and showers had a build up of calcium that was difficult to remove, but 20 years ago we installed a water softener system called Clear Water in hopes of alleviating the problem. Clumps of calcium immediately started coming out of our pipes (can you imagine?), but the dishwasher and clothes washing machines still weren’t efficient. The other alternative is to add a water softening system using large amounts of salts.
What’s the Big Deal with Calcium and Water?
While water is in the ground, it picks up soluble bits of whatever it passes through. While this can mean contamination that makes the water unfit to drink, in many cases it simply means that the water contains minerals found in the earth. Of these, calcium in water is of particular importance because it affects the water's ability to function in our homes. Calcium in water makes our water hard.
One effect of hard water is that soaps and detergents lose some effectiveness. Instead of dissolving completely, soap combines with the minerals to form a coagulated soap curd. Because less soap is dissolved, more is required. And the sticky insoluble curd hangs around-it clings to the skin and may actually inhibit cleansing. Washed hair seems dull and lifeless.
The Solution that Worked for Me
Now we add white vinegar to balance out the calcium and prevent buildups.
Why does vinegar work on calcium? The basic chemistry behind this relationship is that the two compounds neutralize each other and have that classic acid/base reaction you may recognize from an elementary school volcano experiment. The vinegar breaks down the calcium to clear any clogs easily.
I use vinegar now to combat the calcium buildup in our pipes and in our dish and clothing washers. I also use less than half of the recommended amount for detergents to avoid added artificial scents. I still use a teapot to heat water but it tends to get a calcium buildup, so straight vinegar does the trick of keeping it clean. The combination of a little detergent and vinegar keeps my clothes vibrant and my dishes clean. My shower head still has a lot of calcium build up on it. I’ve been meaning to take it down and let it soak in vinegar for a few days, but like most non-urgent matters have not. Besides a vinegar soak may be a lost cause and total replacement may be an easier solution at this point.
My advice: take advantage of the natural reaction of vinegar and calcium to see how it may improve your lifestyle. Using all natural, organic products like Edye’s Naturals will also help you live your happiest, healthiest life!
Skincare and pet care often do not go hand in hand, as animal skin is more sensitive to the chemicals in human products. Because of its all-natural, organic, edible ingredients, Edye’s can safely be used on pets to help treat their skin conditions too! Here are some things to know about using human products on our furry friends, but consult your veterinarian for the best advice on caring for their skin needs.
Thinner skin – their epidermis has a turnover rate of 20 days compared to a human’s 28 days. The canine epidermis is also only three to five cells thick instead of the ten to fifteen cells thickness on humans.
More permeable – animal skin is often used as a replacement for human skin in drug trials, but it has been found that the permeation of hydrophobic compounds through the epidermal layer is higher than through human skin.
Smaller body mass – because cats and dogs have a smaller body mass than humans, they are more affected by what is put on them or what they ingest.
So how can Edye’s Face and Body Butter help relieve pets of their skin conditions?
If your pet is scratching or nibbling at their fur, first rule out ticks, fleas, and mites. Irritated skin can be a result of many problems such as skin diseases, allergies, ear problems, and other illnesses. Use Edye’s to help relieve minor cuts, bruises, and itching. If the problem stems from something your pet may be ingesting, consult your veterinarian about changing their diet or adding probiotics.
Understand that the best thing for your furry friend is to get a proper diagnosis as soon as possible so treatment can begin. Expose them only to all natural, safe products that won’t exacerbate their condition, like Edye’s Naturals
It’s no secret that obesity is an epidemic in the United States, and there’s plenty of research conducted each year to learn why its happening and how to best prevent it. As revealed in Michael Moss’ book Salt Sugar Fat: How the Food Giants Hooked Us, not everyone is working to combat the issue. In fact, the food industry is made up of intelligent scientists and chemists, whose main objective is to keep the general population eating their “bad for you” products by any means necessary. And they push them as though they are legalized narcotic. According to Moss there are three key ingredients that act much like drugs do in affecting your brain’s pleasure zones: salt, sugar, and fat and packaged food manufacturers work hard main high levels of them in the food you feed your family.
Through interviews with industry insiders, Moss unveils the inner workings of the food industry and shares anecdotes that might make someone wonder what food is left to trust, including:
While Moss leaves it up to public health advocates and organizations to solve the problem of holding the food industry accountable, you can always take your health into your own hands. Always choose to eat whole foods and read labels of every thing you consume or use on your body (avoid ingredients you don’t understand or can’t pronounce.) Most importantly choose to treat your body well inside and out with organic products with ingredients you can understand such as Edye’s Naturals.
